The art of starting over

The art of starting over

There's something in the January air that makes us believe everything is possible. The calendar pages are blank, the previous year is behind us, and we feel renewed energy to become better versions of ourselves.

But here's the truth nobody wants to hear: January has no magical properties. January 1st is a day like any other. What is real is a psychological phenomenon called "the fresh start effect", studied by Professor Katherine Milkman at Wharton.

Why fresh starts motivate us

When we perceive a temporal landmark—a new year, a birthday, even a Monday—our brain creates a psychological separation between our "past self" (with all its failures) and our "future self" (full of potential).

It's as if we could start with a clean slate.

The January motivation trap

The problem is that we confuse this wave of motivation with discipline. Motivation is a temporary visitor; discipline is a permanent resident.

January gives us free motivation, but when February arrives with its gray routine, that motivation evaporates.

That's why 80% of New Year's resolutions are abandoned before the end of the second month.

How to use the fresh start to your advantage

1. Start ridiculously small. Don't commit to going to the gym five days a week. Commit to putting on your sneakers every day.

2. Create systems, not goals. "I want to lose 10 kilos" is a goal. "I walk 20 minutes after eating" is a system.

3. Add friction to the bad, remove it from the good. If you want to eat better, don't buy junk food. If you want to read more, leave the book on your pillow.

4. Find company. Shared habits are 65% more likely to stick.

January's true gift

January doesn't give you superpowers. It gives you permission. Permission to reinvent yourself, to let go of what didn't work, to try again.

But that permission has no expiration date. You can start over any Monday. Any morning. Any moment.

Today is as good a day as any to begin.
