The habit of reflecting

The habit of reflecting

Socrates said the unexamined life is not worth living. But most of us live on autopilot, never stopping to look inward.

Reflection is the habit that improves all other habits.

Why reflection matters

Without reflection, we repeat the same mistakes. We follow patterns that don't work. We never learn from our own experience.

Experience is not what happens to you. It's what you do with what happens to you.

Three levels of reflection

Daily (2 minutes): What worked today? What didn't? What will I do differently tomorrow?

Weekly (15 minutes): What patterns do I see? Did I fulfill my intentions?

Monthly/Quarterly (1 hour): Am I advancing toward my goals? Are my habits still aligned with my values?

Frequency matters more than duration. Better 2 minutes daily than 1 hour monthly.

Powerful questions for reflection

  • Which habit is having the most positive impact?
  • What am I avoiding and why?
  • What would I do if I wasn't afraid?

Start today. Ask yourself: What did I learn this week about myself?
