You're at the beach, or in the mountains, or visiting family. Your normal routine doesn't exist. What do you do with your habits?
The right answer isn't "abandon them until I return" nor "maintain them exactly the same."
The vacation balance
Vacations have a purpose: rest and renewal. If your habits become a source of stress, they're failing their function.
But abandoning them completely also has a cost: you break patterns that took months to build.
The goal isn't vacation perfection. It's maintaining the thread without losing the rest.
The minimum viable strategy
For each habit, define the minimum version that maintains identity without ruining vacation:
It's not about doing the same as always. It's about not completely disconnecting.
- 20 min meditation → 3 conscious breaths
- Run 5km → walk 15 minutes
- Read 30 pages → read 5 minutes
Practical tips
1. Decide before leaving.
2. Use universal anchors. "After morning coffee" works anywhere.
3. Forgive without guilt.
4. Return gradually.
Vacations as proof
If you can maintain your habits (in reduced version) during vacation, you've proven something important: they're really part of you, not just your routine.
